Everyone in the Army had one. Even if you didn't smoke. It made a good light to unlock your wall locker if you came in after lights out.

And there's something about the sound of it closing. Nothing else sounds quite like it.

Snap it open and spin the sparker wheel all in one motion...cool.
Little yellow plastic holders for the spare flints.
    Relacement wicks.

You could write your name on a ceiling by holding the flame about 2 inches below it and let the soot rise for the "ink"

Jimi Hendrix had a different use for the lighter fluid, anybody know?

Zippo sponsors an annual vintage car race at Watkins Glen race course near Corning N.Y. Zippo has a '47 Chrysler lighter car which is a replica of the vehicle that represented Zippo in parades, expos and fairs in all 48 states during the late 1940's and early 1950's. It has simulated flames coming out the tops of the lighter as they zoom around the track at intermission.
There's also a Zippo Visitors Centre located in Pennsylvania that opened in 1997....it's got every lighter on display that Zippo ever produced.
....all this from a guy that doesn't smoke...
If every a...... could do this,I wouldn't have a job...

I used to collect them. From the age of 16 till I was probably 28 I bought one every few weeks or so. I have several friends from differnt places that would bring them back to me. One buddy was a commander in the Merchant Marines and traveled the world and would always bring one back for me. I have them in the closet in a box. Then last time I went through them I had around 150 of them, all different. Thanks Roy, now I'll have to get them out again.

carried one in nam for the who;e time. Worked great for getting rid of leaches and other unwanted parasites. Oh yea, I smoked then and lit plenty of comforting night cigarettes.
