    Angry installer used wrong wire

I had someone install a Fujitsu mini split and they used 12-2 to connect the AOU24RLXFZ condenser and ASU12RLF evaporator. Manual calls for a 14-3. They used the ground wire for #3 (controller) and didn't ground the unit. They said that the piping would ground it. Is this safe?

This is just one of the problems I see with the install but I think it's the major one from my untrained prospective.

Yeah, I'd see communicating issues with that.

Should have been 14/3, or two 14/2's.

Woah, wait a second, just looked at the model numbers.

Can someone show that being matching equitment?

Looks to me like a 2 ton outdoor, with a 1 ton indoor.
Quick glance at fujitsu site, I don't see them matching.

Tell me you have 2 of those evaporators?
"Better tell the sandman to stay away, because we're gonna be workin on this one all night."

"Dude, you need more than 2 wires to a condenser to run a 2 stage heatpump."

    "Just get it done son."

as was said have the proper wire ran

you have power running throgh the baer ground wire on #3 witch is even more unsafe and no ground at all

if the unit isnt grounded how does the pipeing ground it

There are two 1 ton indoor evaporators.
Both are wired the same way.
Black to #1, white to #2 and bare ground to #3.
The installer used indoor 12-2; yellow sheathing.
I've run a lot of wire so I knew he used indoor wire instead of outdoor UV protected wire.
This is just one of several questionable parts of the install.
He didn't use a wall sleeve, didn't wrap the pipes, drain hose and wire with the provided cloth tape, didn't bolt the compressor to the cement pad, used expanding foam to seal the wall, and didn't put an extension on the drain line. It just drains down the inside of the rain down spout he used to cover the lines.
I'm not sure I even want this guy to touch anything else.
Any recommendations for an installer who could fix this mess in the Collegeville PA area?

Why don't you call the installation manager of the company you hired and express your concerns?

I hired a guy who is starting his own business.
He's the dad of a kid who works in our lab.
The guy used to work for a large industrial firm.
He got run over by an old lady in a parking lot and got busted up pretty bad.
He can't go back with the old company because physical issues with climbing ladders.
He has a helper who does the ladder work.
I felt sorry for him and figured that since his kid worked with me he'd do his best.
Boy was I wrong and don't feel to sorry for him at this point.

At least let him have a chance to make it right. If he is selling Fujitsu, they do have classes on how to install and service their equipment... I'm sure his supplier offered this to him...

I'm going to take a vacation day next week and offer to help him take it down and do it right. I could have done everything myself except the brazing and Freon work. This is one of the few jobs I figured I'd leave to a pro. I'll let you know how we make out and will post some before and after pictures if I can figure out how the URL deal works.

I don't do any of the underlined parts either.

Please, tell us that he didn't do any brazing on the system. That's a big no no. All connections are to be made with R410a flare fittings, not standard 45* flares. No brazing. These units have no filter/drier, nor should they. Therefore, no brazing or soldering is to be done as this causes oxidation and impurities inside the lines that can clog the small capillaries in the refrigerant circuit.

Also, do NOT use any wire nuts or make any twist splices in the wiring: that can cause communication errors.

I don't think your guy has much experience with mini splits.

I agree..... except brazing does not cause oxidation if you purge nitrogen

Does this sound like an installer that would use nitrogen?
