I had a friend who is a Trane tech tell me he didn't use dryers after a mild burnout but simply used acid-away instead. Is he pulling my leg?

He could indeed be telling the truth. Everyone has thier own method of doing stuff (some right, some wrong).

Personally any time the system is open, especially for a major repair like that I'll cut the old drier out and replace it with a high acid filter drier (it's job it to get rid of the acid). If the system had MAJOR acid issue's I'd flush the system, then put in the above filter drier.

Flushing the system is best but I ALWAYS install a new filter/drier.After 30 years, I've learned that you can never do enough to CYA. Better safe than sorry.

Any additive including acid away can void compressor warranty.

No such thing as high acid driers either. I think a counter person is misinforming you and you believed him.

R-11 flush works great.

Never had a problem with acid again after using.

i look at it like this. suppose you got an injection of a caustic chemical into your blood stream and you began feeling pretty crummy. the doc at the er told you if you continue like this you would be dead real soon. so you call in two specialists. one tells you he is going to inject you with another chemical that will counteract the deadly chemical in your system. of course hes not sure exactly how much bad chemical is in you body so hes not exactly sure how much good chemical to inject to offset it. but hes happy to guess and do it and you'll be just fine. Doctor number two comes in and says hes going to run all your blood through a machine that filters and puifies it and after a few days all the bad chemicals that can be extracted will be in the machine and not your body , he will then disconnect the machine and you will be back to normal, which would you choose. i would choose doc number two. the in line high acid filter drier on the liquid line and the suction line. then replace the liquid lline filter and delete the suction line filter in about a week. be sure he wires the system to run only in cool or heat till driers replaced. More time , more labor, more effort , more thought. and a second trip, But that is the way a pro does it.

Been yrs since I read the instruction as I don't use the stuff. However if I remember correctly they did state to install new driers to pick up any trash in the system.

So you disable defrost on the heat pump in winter time?




I think if you talked to a kidney dialisis patient, you'd find near 100% would prefer a shot 3 times a week to the blood cleaning.

I've used acid-away in semis, but I still had to change the oil sometimes 3, sometimes 4-5 times if severe. not sure if it really works, but it's fun to use There is a thumbnail formula for it, if system has less than one gallon oil, and if moderate burnout, then use X.
or if one gallon, and severe then 2X. etc. I've never had further service issues with hermetics or semis that I've replaced regarding further burnout when I used acidaway ....YET!
the thumbnail rule applies to compressors in this size range (residential) too.

no you wire it to run only in heat then tell customer to stay warm using only aux heat which is heavy enough to get them buy cause a professional put it in and sized wire accordingly so the heat strip was heavy enough to offset the ac in defrost and consequently it is now heavy enough to keep them warm till pump can be put back on line.with temps above 40 degrees it shouldn't try to defrost and if it gets below 40 have them run only emerg heat

Its takes some repiping, but a suction filter drier between the accumilator and the compressor works better on a clean up.
And doesn't cause the home owner alot of inconvience, or raise their electric bill.

yes there are high acid removal dryer inserts (GOLD LABEL)

i have never flushed any system, i have purged a couple (kentucky flush)

and acid away works fine as an addition to a suction dryer on a severe burnout,

you need to know how much oil the system holds and you need to know how to read the directions on the bottle of acid away!
