When I was a rookie you were dealing with refrigerant blends that had to be mixed for the application. R12 days. It does give you a differant opinion of the modern inventions they are pushing at us.

If you didnot check start components it could be a bad relay or cap.

Would a bad start capacitor trip the breaker? After thinking about it for a second, of course it would. Sort of embarrassing how much I missed on that call...

It could...if you jumped out the overload protector.

A bad start capacitor would prevent the compressor from starting and so the compressor motor would then draw lock rotor amps. If the OL were connected, it would sense this and trip. That's what it's there for.
Without the OL protector, it's very likely the motor would burn, very rapidly.
