Hey all -
I've been lurking for a bit in preparation for my AC system to finally die. Looks like it passed away Tuesday night.
The system was a Dunham Bush VCR36 Series E11 - it doesn't seem that DB makes residential units anymore - just commercial.
Can anyone tell me the SEER rating of that model?
As best as we can tell - it was installed in 1970.
Looking to replace it with something that is very effecient and quiet. The air handler is of the same vintage - it's up in the attic - space pack design with HV air tubes.
We are in the NW Chicago Suburban area.
Probaly 5 to 6 seer.
With a HV system you won't get a real high seer.
A 13 seer condenser will do just fine.
Hate to tell ya but those old D/B with Space Pak could have been rated as low as 4.9 way back when! High velocity air handlers knock a couple points off the possible SEER of the outdoor unit. Your effective SEER with a "13 SEER" outdoor unit is about 11 SEER. You can replace with either Space Pak or Unico air handler and any outdoor unit though I'd make sure it is an ARI rated match which will give SEER & capacity. They often knock 1/2 to even 1 ton off the outdoor unit's potential capacity.
Wow - that low. In thoery I should be able to just about cut my ComEd AC portion by 30 - 35%?
The placement of the condenser is right by our screened porch - I'd like to get a low dB one that is still really effecient.
Is this possible? Any suggestions? Should I replace the air handler as well (it's vintage 1970)?
Yes, replace the indoor also.
You will have to add a couple more outlets for the new air handler.
York has some quite condensers.
