Good article, pretty much tells it like it is. The whole world has been running short for the last year.

I think it was a interesting point, about how the manufactures could be manipulating their newer, higher priced drugs into todays market.

The free market would never in their wildest Dreams attempt to do that.

These shortages are not Worldwide either just mainly here. It just more profitable to make boner pills and botox

A bill has recently been in discussion in the US that contains measures to strengthen the ways in which drug shortages are dealt with. The US FDA is also taking action by asking companies to alert them as to possible drug shortages so that it can prepare back ups. But what about other parts of the world?

Drug shortages are not unique to the US. The UK is also currently struggling with severe shortages of prescription medicines. In the US, many shortages have been attributed to plant closures or manufacturing problems, but in the UK the shortages are being caused for a different reason: parallel trade.

Hospitals across Canada are facing a serious medication shortage, as the country's largest drug manufacturing facility suspends production of many products.

Sandoz, which produces generic pharmaceuticals, was recently forced to scale back after violations at its Boucherville, Quebec plant. While it's been upgrading equipment, fewer products were being pumped out.

Then the facility caught fire Sunday, grinding the entire operation to a halt.

Some common causes for the shortages include manufacturing difficulties, natural disasters that affect production, reductions in the supply of raw materials (of which 80% come from outside the U.S.), unexpected increases in demand, voluntary recalls, manufacturer business decisions, FDA enforcement actions to ensure public safety and artificial shortages due to stockpiling.

The chemotherapy drugs listed earlier are in short supply mainly because generic-drug maker Teva's (TEVA) California plant was shut down following an FDA warning letter on manufacturing violations. Other producers can't keep up with the increased demand.

    No shortage of Viagra though.
