This makes no sense.
Theres no need for a relay on the W circuit. If the wire was broken from the tstat then the relay wouldn't work either. If the W circuit was bad on the board then the relay wouldn't matter. Why ? Why? Why?

Nevermind. Just hit me. They're using the W circuit as a Common to power the Chronotherm tstat. Guess it runs on batteries in heat mode.

isolation relay for a power stealing thermostat.
protects furnace controls from feedback from thermostat.
