yep, another meter threat.
i'm looking to buy a meter to work on motors and motor drives (vfd's), and additionally a meter that could handle most of the commercial/industrial tasks.
looking at flukes website i've found three possible meters.
189, 87v, 1587.
189 seems to have the most features but lacks motor drive measurement which 87v has. and 1587 comes with insulation testing.
any opinions of which one of these would be the best meter
thanks for viewing. from the past threats i know that there's a bunch of people using these meters. any input on this?
I have the 1587. I do alot of commercial/industrial/three phase, trying to do more residential. Anyway, what I like about the 1587 is: it's true rms, neat backlight, and it tells me spot-on, no bs, when a winding is shorted to ground. It tells me things other meters can't. I can clamp the leads on a good motor and show a customer, then clamp the leads on a bad one and show the customer right away when somethings kaput. I have an old model 23, looks like new since I take care of my stuff and keep it clean, but after buying the 1587, the 23 stays in the truck.
I bought it from myrelipro.com. I usually buy all my stuff from the local wholesalers, but none have their Fluke act together and I wind up at Grainger, since they have the most Fluke stuff. Relipro was about 100 bucks cheaper. I'll support my local guys for a couple bucks, but to save a hundred samoleans, I'll buy on the net.
I have the 87V and I love it. The 1587 does look nice though. Probably cost more than the 87V though.
are we talking about current measurement or all the other things a meter can do for us?
For current, I believe every mechanic should have a Fluke 336.
It measures a/c-d/c current, true rms, voltage, frequency (if Im not mistaken) and continuity.
But where it leaves off, the 1587, 87V ad a small handful of other Fluke meters will fill the bill.

i allready have a meter that takes care of most of the regular maintenance and troubleshooting, but now i want to get something for the next level.
so what's the preferred meter for a commercial/industrial service tech?
more so from the guys who commission, service, and troubleshoot vfd's what's your meter of choice?
or large tonnage chillers mechanics which meter has the funktionality to get the job done?
for the ac function, the yellow button activates the new low pass filter function. the low pass filter is designated to allow for accurate measurements of pwm drive outpur voltage and frequency (motor speed) readings. output voltage readings will now correspond with the output voltage and motor speed indications shown in the motor control display panel.
without the low pass filter enabled the meter output is approximately 30% higher than the actual drive output voltage. this reading utilizes the meter's full 20 kHz bandwidth. many other multimeters available today will not provide readings which compare to the drive's display value.
the fluke 189 does not seem to have this feature. but is it compensated by the meters 1 MHz bandwith?
