With the shrinking military budget we better hurry up or else we will be sending our boy's to war with cap guns and water pistols.

It may very well be a war within our own borders. My brother knows many people in the government that work for the FBI, US Marshals, Dept. of Homeland Security etc. as he is a sales rep for a company that makes firearm accessories/parts.
I will tell you this...and it comes from their mouths not mine.
Our government is preparing for the largest civil unrest in history...unlike none have ever witnessed."If anybody can draw on the power, where do we put the meter?" - JP Morgan before pulling Tesla funding

I think these students of political science have it pretty well figured out:

But it might not be suited for the future. How is it going to employ all the people in the world that want to work and get the good life without ruining the environment? Who says it has to be built on a socialist model? Some management or strategy for the future may be needed. How that takes place might be better decided by more than some fat cats that run hedge funds.

I can agree that there may need to be some adjustments made, but right now we are buried in regulations, red tape, taxes and fees.
Capitalism principals are the only large scale economic success. Your basic socialist european models even operated under an engine based on capitalists principals. Take even communist china, they introduced tightly controlled capitalism for their success.
There is nothing better than capitalism.
The only two examples of those that flatly reject capitalism are cuba and the USSR. One impoverished, the other dissolved. I forgot one: North korea.... There is a thriving place. LOL!
My point being capitalism is not the problem. In the USA I am seeing the socialist/progressive left trying to choke the life out of it, not saying we should have wild unbridled capitalism.I draw all my schematics in crayon now. If they cannot always be correct, they can at least be colorful.

Seems to me our governments had something to do with the development of trade with other countries, in a series of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements. Unfortunately, as our government lowered trade restrictions, it failed to keep our wages and taxes competitive.

Capitalism is a form of business development.
Let's say you're a baker and you want to start a doughnut shop. A friend of yours knows how good you are at baking and thinks you have a good business head on your shoulders. You want to go into business, but you don't have enough money to pay the rent for your small bakery. So your friend offers to pay the rent for you for the first two years, provided that you give him a five percent share of the ownership. You agree.
Your friend is now a capitalist. By taking a risk and providing the capital which enables you to make your business successful, your friend has turned himself into an evil, money-grubbing capitalist.
If he had simply loaned you the money at one percent interest, he would still be a capitalist. Same difference.
Capitalism is simply a method which allows business to get started or to grow, and which compensates the people who are willing to take the risk.
Several decades ago, if a poor family wanted to build a house, they would buy the land, dig a basement, put a roof on the basement, and live in the basement until they could afford to buy the materials for the first floor. The savings and loan business made it possible for them to buy the whole house at once.
That's capitalism.
Most businesses are competitive. Because of their competition, they have small profit margins. Their profit margin is usually somewhere between -10% and +10%. I have worked for and done business with multimillion dollar businesses who were satisfied with a 2% average profit margin.
There are some big businesses, however, which have learned how to hire special accountants, tax lawyers, and lobbyists. They work hand-in-hand with crony Congressmen. Some of these businesses have profits in the neighborhood of 25%. (Two that spring to mind are big banks and pharmaceutical companies. Big Oil is in the 6-8% range.) But they wouldn't be able to make such profits if not for our 80,000 page tax code, the development of overly burdensome agencies like OSHA and the EPA, which have a tendency to brutalize small companies, and the cooperation of various Congressmen and other overseers, such as the US SEC, FNMA, and FHLMC.
The problem with US business is not capitalism. It's cronyism, a polite word for corruption.
Do more laws and regulations help? How about if we just prohibit certain practices all together, like the manufacture and distribution of alcohol?
When regulations get too complex and burdensome, companies look for simpler ways. Sometimes this means getting someone to look the other way. Sometimes it means creative accounting. Sometimes it means new loopholes in the law. Sometimes it means moving to another state or country. But what ever the method, the company is trying to stay in business. When it has to bend the rules and take larger risks, there had better be larger profits.Last edited by Space Racer; 05-08-2012 at 02:23 PM.
