furnace making buffeting sound when gas on

when my wife turned up the thermostat this a.m. and the furnace (a 16-20 yr old Miller) started she said it made a funny sound so she shut it off. when i got in and turned it back on the main burner lit up but it made a noise like putt-putt-putt very quickly. when the fan is on only it sounds fine. can i use this until my furnace guy can get here on monday? many tks

It sounds like there's a burner/ignition problem. That could be potentially dangerous or even deadly.

Leave it off and have a competent tech check it out.

If I tell you it's okay to use based on the insufficient information you've given, then I would be responsible for any potential harm. So I have to say NO.
You're dealing with something can cause a fire or an explosion. Caution is better than being sorry later.
Turn off the furnace and use a space heater until Monday. Or pay for a service call on the weekend.
