    York R123 Cleanup

    Working on york R123 chiller at moment, this machine open for sometime ( due to customer not approving works) , just briefly I usually install driers across cooler/evap, utilising high side pressure for movement across driers.

    Anyone got any better ideas??

    Clarify please. The refrigerant was removed and system was opened and left open for how long? Was it at least covered with plastic with an N2 purge?

    What was left open? Just the waterside? What was broken on the chiller? Leaving the refirerant side exposed to the atmosphere is one of the worst things you can do to a chiller... or rather pretty much any refrigerant based cooling system. Main concern in my mind is the compressor bearings rusting. Then the inlet guide vanes rusting and their linkages. Finally rust inside the shells can cause heat transfer issues in the future as the rust comes off and gets bonded to the copper tubes. We just retubed a chiller at my work due to this issue.... that can run as hgih as $60k on a 350T chiller.

    Was the unit previously full of water? To dry it out, just pump it down. We even hooked up a small circualtion pump and ran it through a couple 5 gallon 120VAC residential water heaters to get some heat on the unit to help boil off the water. IF it was flooded, just give it a few weeks running that way.

    The last I heard the ex-Carrier guy that came up with the "Zuggie-Beast" was working with Refi-Max out of the Regional office in Smyrna Ga. Albeit I believe he resides in Florida. I had him do a couple of chillers saving a few tons of 134 with that "Creation" of his towed behind his truck on a huge trailer. On one chiller He managed to clean the 4000# charge whilst the chiller was running in one day.....

    Refrigerant was previously removed, waterside drained (we are not looking at tube failure), there will be no issues with igv or comp bearings, nitrogen was purged and heat lamps utilised at vessels, client sat on repairs to long, now we have go ahead to get chiller running.

    Have had this issue in past, and have used filters at cooler vessel to clean up system, also meant a lot of oil filter changes as well though, was just seeing if any other suggestions were out there.

    This is the 2nd time in 10-18 years same site, have been told to teardown, inspect,repair (having being told a new chiller is in their budget).

    Then client argues cost of filter changes etc to get a chiller running again that has sat idle for 6-8months.

    If you have taken the precautions stated then I wouldn't know where all the "dirt" would be coming from. When the machine is put back together and evacuated properly I think you should be fine. The only time I have ever put a cooler clean up kit on a York YT is when the system took on water though a tube failure.

    Richard, he cleaned up a 19EA burn out for me a few years ago. Took him longer to set it up than the actual cleaning. The refrig sample came back as virgin R-12.

    Yes he has it together, i could go on for days with some of equipment he's designed and built. I started to reply to another thread with " I know a guy" ... Haven't been in a lot of years but he has a shop that's was off the chain in the early 90's. Outstanding person altogether.

    The "Zuggie-Beast" to me is like huge pipe-organ found in a few places with more pedals and knobs and valves that made absolutely no sense at all to me. I am not exactly new in this trade but the valving etc. was beyond my understanding. To watch Brer' Britt fiddle with them valves and such is like watching a master play a pipe organ. Can you just imagine if they put the "Zuggie-Beast" on the maeket what the damn instruction manual would be....It would be larger than a New York city phone book.

    Yes, yes and yes. I haven't talked to him in a few, but he should be coming out of his no compete. In which you my be able to get your very own equipment, I hope. He also had some refrigerant in storage. If you need his contact info let me know.

    I watched the zuggie miester operate those pipe organ valves, and it was a cool motion of events. After set-up and putting the trailer up on scales he pushed the entire charge of 3000 + lbs into his vessel and pulled the chiller's utility vessel into a vacuum. He then weighed the charge and started manipulating valves. Basically he recycled the charge thru cores, pushed it back into the utility vessel and circulated refrigerant there. While doing that he pulled out cores and replaced. Pushed the charge back to the trailer's vessel and cleaned up the charge again. ( to insure residuals in the chiller utility vessel were also cleaned out). After clean-up circulation he pushed it all back to the chiller and evacuated all vapor from his unit back into the chiller. Pulled out his second set of cores and dismantled. My best memory says he did all this in less than four hours. It was impossible to keep up with his valving. He told me he designed that thing on the back of a napkin during an airline flight.
