Tappan A/Cs are made by Nordyne. Not sure how long Nordyne has been making them under that name. But its been a long long time.

I put an evaporator in a Tappan downflow air handler a few days ago. The only way to describe it is that it was massive. It was older than me and Im almost 40. Cant remember what the old timer said the age of the unit was but remember we talked about it being older than me.

That was from when Tappan actually made A/C units. Probably a 70s unit.

72 or earlier. He was in love with the unit. I pushed for him to go all new but he wasnt hearing it. Original motor and heat kit. He said the coil I was installing was the fourth. All had rusted out drain pans

Tappan is a brand licensed by Nordyne. They started in 1919 as International Oil Heating. So just shy of a century.

I sold two Tappan 4- ton AH hooked up to two Ruud 12 seer condensers 10 years ago, and have never had one issue. Those were the heavy cabinet Tappan AH you could drop off a bldg. and they would break the concrete. The reason I used Tappan is because that was when Ruud was having some issues with their AH's, plus I did not like the 825 rpm Ruud AH.
