Placement of ID TXV bulb - how critical?

Instructions say it should be installed on a horizontal run of the vapor line, near the equalizer line. If bulb installation is made on a vertical run, the bulb should be located at least 16 inches from any bend ,and on the tubing sides opposite the bend.

Mine has been installed on the vertical run just past the bend, and before the multi branching of the vapor line to the coil.

Obviuosly not 16 inches from any bend...

My Trane units I install have the bulb right at the bend before the suction line comes out.
I serviced a Gooooman unit the other day and their txv bulb is outside the cabinet. Insulated of course.

As long as its insulated from any ambient attic air you can put it anywhere on the suction.

If mounted vertically, make sure the power element cap tube is "up" on top of the power element, not on the bottom.

The power element is best mounted on the suction line near where the external equalizer measures the pressure drop over the evaporator coil back to the TXV.

When mounted horizontally, they're usually mounted tightly on a cleaned tubing surface at 10 or 2 o clock positions.

As critical as mounting is; it is equally important to run all the checks to see if the TXV is functioning properly & there are no restrictions anywhere, including the external equalizer.

If your bulb is horizontal, that is exactly where York recommends to install the bulb. Bends are not an issue, that way. It would be near the equalizer line also, on a York coil like mine.

The guys told me it's fine where mine is (vertical, past the bend), as long as it's secured and insulated. Which it is. Thank you for that, you guys. Much appreciated.

I'm then trying to understand why York would say to put it at least 16 inches from any bend (when vertical),and on the tubing sides opposite the bend.

    It is.

That is what York recommends as well.

They did not check the valve itself, but the temps while heating.
