union jobs are not what they seem to be. well. all jobs dont seem to be all what they seem to be. Always look for your best interest. and what ever shows their ugly head first, go for the other one. Ive made that mistake a few times already thinking it would change. If you are at a good job and you like what you are doing stay there because other companies will screw you when you least expect it.
    Get er Done!

Do what has to be done
when it has to be done
as well as it has to be done
And doing it all the time.

Well, I've only worked union HVAC jobs. Right now, though, it's a residential union shop and they have a different pay scale. Before now, I've only worked commercial. I'd rather work for a union shop in this case, but the non-union shop is still better than the residential union company.

Switching jobs should be thought about very closely. There are a lot of good companys bit also alot of bad. You won't really know until you get there. Whenever I am offered a job or interviewed unless you know the company well ask tons of questions.I have gotten myself into a bad spot twice in a row taking jobs with companies that were bad. Now I'm at a comany I love and won't leave here. All places have problems it. is about who treats you the best and gives the most job security. If u can find that I qould stay put there

I totally agree with you Cav. I didn't know much about this company, so I started calling all of my union and non-union contacts. I talked to a guy I work with that used to work for him. I even called their suppliers and asked questions. I talked to him on the phone for about an hour, interviewed for 2 hours, sent 2 different e-mails with various questions. I've done about as much research as possible on these guys and they seem pretty cool. I interviewed or had a "meeting" with two different union shops. One I would drop everything to work for and the other I would probably move to (depending on how things go with this company) and they both said I have the job, IF work picks up this summer (which most summers do). But, as it is, I only actually have one real offer available now.

Best case scenario where I am now... I'll get maybe 20 hours a week in the winter. Worste case scenario there... I'll get layed off and my unemployment will be more than or equal to working 20 hours a week here. Mathmatically, I gotta go to pay the bills, even though I love the staff where I am. They're great people to work with. Besides, I really want to do more than residential splits.

I just heard through the grapevine that a certain fortune 500 multi-national goliath HVAC service company lost their national account with a major pharmacy chain, and that CMS picked up the bulk of it.

So what pharmacy chain? What shop? Just curious. Never seen a CMS van around here or heard of them.

I don't see them, either. I cover PA, NJ (south of Trenton) and DE.

It's gotta be Emcor/New england Mechanical. One of the largest non-union service shop in the area. I spoke with one of their techs last summer and he told me they were doing mandatory 14-16 hr shifts. Not sure how much truth was behind it but they seem to have alot mechanical service work. I can almost guarantee it's CVS too.

My guess is Target, but multi-NATIONAL goliath sounds like Johnson Control/York or Siemens or something. Service guys around here work pretty consistantly... as long as they're not resi techs.

In Philly, Emcor is the old "Fluidics" company, and they are union.

CMS has the other company called Nextech HVACR or something like that. I see them running around all over the place.
