Compressor terminals

I took a look at this Friday afternoon. The in house guys think they lost the refrigerant charge here. Can this be fixed? Compresser ia a Copeland 6RN2-3000-TSK.

I would think a call to Copeland would be in order. I had a Bitzer compressor leak through the terminals and they had a kit to fix the problem.

Yes it can be fixed, buy a terminal kit,quote him 8 hours worth of labor and follow torque recommendations, they snap with ease.

We sell the terminal block already built ready to install. Just take the wires off the inside of the old plate and make sure you put them back on the correct terminal of the new plate. A word of caution though. Many times when we sell a terminal block to replace one that looks like yours, the motor windings burn out shortly after it is put back in service. You should make your customer aware that it could happen.

why would the windings burn?

Replacing the terminals, terminal o-rings, terminal plate gasket, or the terminal plate itself does not make the motor any more likely to burn. What will burn the motor out is a poor connection on the terminal that drops enough voltage to create a single phase or voltage/current imbalance condition. By the uniform discoloration on the buss bars from T4-T7, T5-T8, and T6-T9, as well as the discolored lug on T1, it looks like you already had overloading, bad connections, and/or loose wires. Look how the plastic card in between the motor terminals and the winding temp sensor terminal plate is all burnt. In my experience, this is one of the things that causes terminal o-rings to leak. The terminal swells up from the heat and expands the o-ring. When the terminal cools back down, the o-ring does not fit tightly around the terminal.
