Has anyone here ever worked on Turbo Ice Makers?

Are those made by Turbo Air?

Back when we worked on them, they were manufactured in Denton, TX.

The plant that we did work for was in Denison, TX. They had four of them.

One made 60 tons per day, Two made 72 tons per day, and One more made 80 tons per day.

5 condensing units for the "vault".....35 hp Copelands.

We also had our own plant for one season, then the bigger plant bought us out. One 10 and one 6 ton unit.

Has anyone here ever worked on Turbo Ice Makers?

Yes - we used to service lots of them. Most were serving churches. Great concept, to produce ice during off-peak hours to reduce cost of cooling.

Common problems we found was the leak at the feeder tubes / stainless evap plate connection. We had to re-braze most of them.

The Turbos got phased out and lost to standard DX HVAC systems due to several factors.

The ones we worked on made sheets that were broke into irregular pieces when they dropped from the plates during defrost by a crusher bar.

Defrost was accomplished by running water on the back of the plates. Dad concocted a hot gas defrost system, that a few years later Turbo adopted into their design.
