HVAC inside unit selection

HI All,

I have an old ( probably 20 years old)HVAC for my condo and the repair man indicated that the coil inside the air handling unit is leaking. My questions are

1. Can we replace the coil alone or we need to replace the whole unit?
2. Does the coil has any limitations in size like what if we replace the coil with higher capacity than the existing one? Any incompatibility issues?
3. Do we need to replace the entire outside and inside units?

Coil should be a match to the outdoor. Its size rating may be slightly larger then the outdoor.

Is this a heat pump or a cooling only system? If a HP, I'd highly recommend replacing the entire system. The efficiency gains alone should help you pay for the cost of replacement and if you were to select a unit with a variable speed air handler your comfort level will also rise. If it's a cooling only unit your operational savings would be less (shorter cooling season??) and a coil can be reasonably matched if you can find one with the dimensions needed for your air handler. That said, if you invest in a coil now and the 20-year old compressor croaks in 6-months, you'll be kicking yourself for putting in the coil. All-in-all, a complete replacement is in your bet interest.

It is a Heap pump and runs on Freon.

If everything is 20 years old, your best to replace the whole shabang.
