chimney staining

today i went to do an atu on a ect 05 boiler . checked nozzle size was small
put in correct size . customer said that he had staining coming down his
white chimney onto his slate roof . was it because nozzle size was to small.
i never incounted this before.can someone alberate.

What kind of liner?
Exterior or interior chimney?
How cold is it outside?
Could be excess condensation or a problem like we encountered.
We had a customer who had a Buderus with a oil fired Carlin elite burner.
Not much exposed chimney. 6 inch all fuel chimney into an expensive white decorative enclosure.
Left an orange stain all over side of it above the roof line.
Maximum size nozzle and even took out baffles.
The stain was removed and it came back again.
We changed to a Riello burner and solved problem.
I think it is just the way the fire burns on the carlin.

it is stainless to top threw chimney. has a beckett burner on it. has a stainless cap also.i think because low nozzle size may be the cause.thanks writing me back.

After you changed the nozzle, what did the numbers look like. What was the net stack temp at the breech? What was overfire and breech draft? Yes. Underfiring a boiler could easily cause low stack temps & condensing.

KW10925, first of all, it would be appreciated if you used normal capitalization and punctuation. Also, it would be wise to spell out names fully with the abbreviation in parenthesis first.

The staining could be from condensation or it could be due to the design of the termination cap. Often, I install stainless steel caps with a reverse drip cone to prevent condensate from dripping down the sides of the chimney.

How did you determine the nozzle was undersized? Did you perform before and after combustion analysis?

I'm trying to understand you but do you mean the chimney has a full length chimney liner? The more details you provide the better we may be able to assist you.

I presume you referred to an "Annual tune up" for a Peerless ECT 05 boiler. Thanks

Sorry about the capitalzations. I performed an ATU on the system.The nozzle
size was incorrect,went to my spec book and found correct size.All the numbers were good in the 400s for stack . Dont remember all other specs off hand but the were in range.The chimney is a liner that is all the way to the top.I do not know what kind of a cap it has on it only what customer told me.Thanks for your help.

theres a couple things you need to check.

test smoke of flue gas
perform combustion test and test draft
check for worst case draft
take temperature split of boiler

do you have a senior tech you can goto for help?

It is not uncommon to find larger boilers downfired a little bit. I think the ECT is a Peerless right? I have seen many Peerless boilers run in the 300-400 net stack range with no signs of trouble.
