We have a 17 yr old unit in which the compressor has gone out. The technician is encouraging us to consider a new system. He is afraid if we repair the compressor we may find a relay board is out and they no longer make the part. We would be out the repair cost and be looking for a new system. Comments

Post the Brand, model number and serial number and some here may be able to comment on parts availability. However, at 17 years old, if the compressor is bad, my recommendation would also be to replace it regardless of any other problems or not.

An oem defrost relay board is not your only option to initiate defrost. Aftermarket universal defrost relay boards are available. But I think it would be in your best interest to still have the old unit replaced with a more efficient one instead of the compressor replacement.
