I see that the ones who endorse Nate the loudest are the ones who's boss pay the tab.

Do you honestly feel that NATE certification is gonna change a bad installer into a good one?
Lemme tell you something: I have seen work done by guys who had nationally recognized certs (both NATE and others) and their installs sucked vacuum.
Getting a cert that cost you rip-off money does not guarantee you a good installer or a good tech.
Our newest phone book just came out and there was one company ( a one man shop) who used the NATE emblem in his ad. All the big companies---- no NATE emblem.
Lemme tell you something ironic: The biz owner does not advertise NATE employees, but he has three guys who are NATEDed, rest of the work force
(twenty five people) don't have it or want it..
Now explain that one to me.

Are you saying somebody who refuses NATE is against further education?
If "Somebody Else" foots the bill you'll go for it?
Well, all (at least those of us who gives a rat's behind about this industry) of us are doing our damnedest to keep up with changing technology and paying for classes out of pocket.
Again. NATE guarantees you nothing. If your boss gives you a raise based solely on getting a colorful patch, and does not consider your current job performance, than your company has a problem.
Why isn't getting your state license (where required) more important than some over priced piece of cloth? NATE does not let you open sealed systems legally or pull permits, it does not grant you the right to make a living in HVAC/R.
My Unlimited state issued license gives my customer confidence that I am qualified because a legitimate government board of industry experts say I am good enough.
I would hate to try to convince an HO on a sales call that a NATE test makes me smart enough to take care of their comfort needs. They would have no confidence (in NATE) because they would feel it is a cert issued in the self interest of the HVAC industry, no their self interest.
An organization like RSES has cert programs that were established long before self-serving NATE.
But because they were in-expensive, and the powers that be didn't get a cut, they never grew.

hold your horses before you go putting words in my mouth guy,
i pay for all training and have paid for my own as-well.
what i am saying is that its insane to NOT do it, ESPECIALLY if some one else is paying.................
it also shows some value to your mentality towards the trade as a whole.catch a man a fish , feed him for a day.
teach a man to fish , ruin a good business opportunity.

I just asked for clarification on your post. Nothing was said about you personally.
The rest of my post was just a continuation of of my sentiments on NATE.
You made clear what you meant so now I understand you position on NATE much better.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share your impressions.

i think that you are upset about the NATE program for some reason and im not sure why , not that its any of my buisness, but its like alot of other things in this industry .... you get what you put in.
im not sure what you mean but , since its worded nicely enough ill say "OK".

What is wrong with NATE, what is one way that they have hurt our industry???
I think the reason NATE is spendy is so that hopefully they CAN start educating the consumers about what to look for in a contractor.
You didn't see it in the big co. advertisement, but what about the sales call??? You can bet it gets mentioned...
A bad tech/installer will still be bad, even if he squeaks through the nate test. But a good tech or installer will be just as good or better after studying for the test imo.
Renewing every 5 years makes sense as well.... This industry keeps changing, as fast as we learn, it changes again...
Regards,
Evan

Recognize a program like RSESs CM or Specialist cert. They don't rip you off. They train just for the sake of training.
