fireplace gas valve
Can I use a combination millivolt valve in a vented masonry fireplace?
Currently it only has a manual shut off and 3/8" supply line to the logs.
I'm thinking of 1/2 inch line and Robertshaw 700-504 valve with a remote.

What is currently in the fireplace? Just a log lighter or is there an actual set of gas logs in there? If it is just a log lighter then you need to get the whole gas log assembly which would include a gas valve.

It has gas logs with a manual shut off. No safety valve installed.
I want to change to a remote controlled system. I wonder if the combination
valve 700-504 would work with a shield installed?

Gas logs should be listed. DIY assemble yoursef logs are not listed. Do yourself a favor and buy a pre-assembled listed logset. Look for ANSI Z21.60 std. by a recognized testing lab.
HTHKeep the fire inside the fireplace.
