I'm one of the old fashioned guys who would never consider using the self check-out. High-tech crap while somebody is in need of a job!! I would be more likely to try eliminating the root of the problem, shoot the cat.

Sodaguy technically lives in Massachusetts but he works in Vermont. We have itty-bitty States around this neck of the woods.
The 2 major chains around here are Price Chopper and Hannafords. Our local Price Chopper sells pizza. (pizzes off the local Pizza Palors.) and they have auto check outs.
In Mass they also have Big Y's. But I'm guessing it is Price Chopper because they stink when it comes to PR.
They play all these games with coupons and cards and bonus points and mismarked packages. It's like going into Foxwoods Casino. If you play your cards right you might get groceries.

Had a girlfriend that worked in a clothing store once. She was counting inventory and her hair kept getting the way. so she grabbed a hair clip from one of the bins and placed in her hair. After she finished her inventory count, she went to the rest room. While she was washing her hands, she noticed she still had the clip in her hair. She decided, rather than putting it back, she would just pay for it. When she came out of the restroom, she was surrounded by the store manager, store security, and the local police department. Apparently, the store cameras caught her picking up the clip and putting it in her hair. She was arrested on the spot fired, and humiliated all within a matter of minutes, all for a 60 cent hair clip that she had planned to purchase.
She had called me to come bail her out. While she was crying she explained the story. I told her don't worry. I will take care of it and all charges will be dropped. She asked how? just leave it to me. When I arrived to the station I asked to speak to the arresting officer. They told me that he was still in the back questioning her. The clerk asked me if I was ready to post bail? I said not until I speak to the arresting officer or his supervisor. The clerk paged the supervisor. While I waited for the supervisor to come out, I called the store and demanded to speak to the manager, who never liked me to begin with. He got on the phone and barked out "what the F%^k do you want?" I said in a real calm voice, "first of all if I ever catch you on the street I will kick you a$$. Secondly, your store is about to be sued." I just hung up without giving a chance to for him to re-act. The supervisor comes out and explaind to me the story and the charges that were being held against my girfriend. I looked him straight in the face and asked, "did she physically leave the store with out paying for the item?" he said no, she was coming out of the restroom when they approched her. I then asked in all actuality she didn't steal anything, correct? He looked at his paper work and said I guess. He walked over to the clerk and orderd her release. When she came out, still crying and confused she asked me what did I do. I just explained to her that they had nothing on you because you didn't physically the store. She asked well what about my job? I asked her, do you really want to go back to work there after the S$%t they just put you through? I drove her back to the store so she pick up her car, on her windshield was a note that read "We are deeply sorry for the mistake we made. At this point you are probably considering leagal action and to avoid that we are going to offer you either a cash settlement or we would like to offer you a two year tuition for any local University you wish to attend."
PS there is now a management position open if you intrested please call me. Signed the owner.
She took the management position and the two year tuition. Unfortunately she wanted to continue her education and moved out of state. Only heard from her once since then.Do as I say, not as I do

One time in a small town that I lived in, the local A & P arrested Harry Belafonte for shop lifting. He had a summer home in the area. Same thing, he absent mindedly walked out with something.
He had enough dough to buy the store and flatten it if he wanted to.

I agree. I don't like eliminating jobs unnecessarily. If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.

I'm wondering exactly how that happened, like if maybe the alarm went off and she didn't stop because she didn't realize that she had set it off.

I love my local Wally World neighborhood market, but if you ever screw up, be prepared to hang until dead.
I used the self serve for several years. I am becoming forgetful, so sometimes I don't get all that I purchase, and do not find the mistake until I drive 5 miles home. I have done this maybe 10 times in the last year.
The other day, I left $60 dollars merchandise in 2 bags on the check out bagging shelf. When I returned, I could see the bags behind the manager; frozen foods and drugs, but the manager did not want to give me the bags. When I described what was inside the 2 bags correctly, the manager still did not want to give me the bags. Only after I reminded them I shopped there every weekend and dropped more than a hundred weekly, did she come around. Several workers that previously helped me when I forgot merchandise were standing around.
Since that experience, I never use self serve anywhere.
