Good idea for a thread I'm anxious to see what people have done, I've had my eye on a nice smoker from bass pro for a while but just can't justify the 1600.00 they want for it! It's nice though it a coal type with a fire box attached for coal grilling if needed!

Well, this may not be a smoker, but this an excellent 3 part video on making jerky. I have tried it myself with wonderful results (the furnace filter method). I have not tried making my own liquid smoke, maybe this summer if I get bored one weekend. Anyway, it's up the alley of smoking and an interesting watch.

    desert rat style BBQ

Here is how I made mine.....

started with an old air compressor tank....

    welded on some feet

cut out the lid and welded on some hinges

burned out the brown nasty slime

welded on the fire box(old lp tank)

welded in the 1/4" middle shelf... notice that it is open on the end opposite of the fire box. (reverse flow smoker)

I found this old Korean war shell cannister at a salvage yard and used it as my stack. I love repurposing things.........

Finshed. This thing holds the heat at nice even temp.

Everybody loves my BBQ. I use mesquite wood and cook low and slow.

It's easy to do and I enjoy building things.

Ok, so that is absolutely AWESOME! The wheels are the icing on the cake!

Thanks for sharing, I am pumped up now. I bet a guy could do a long rod with a rotisserie as well with this design.

PS. Is that a thermometer above the handle?

Thanks gibby, When I drive around town I constantly see "tanks" that would make great smokers. I like the rod idea...................
Yes that is a thermometer above the handle. I do 2 thermometers, there is also 0ne on the top where the old pressure valve was.

I'm going to fire it up tomorrow again, have the Alton Brown pull pork marinating and brown sugar-bourbon ribs(mccormick).

I had an old all metal refrigerator, one with the rounded corners. Put a braided gasket on the door, adjustable air intake and a chimney on it. Best smoker I ever had. Got left behind when I moved.

They have 10' x 10' x 10' old buildings here in Southern Maryland that sit about two feet off the ground. I noticed they looked like they caught fire, but the fire went out before it could burn thru. They are old Smoke Houses.
