It has to change state in 2 locations.

Some of the water coils wood heaters around here have been installed in the return air,
I have had to move the ones I have seen do to the hot coils tripping limit switchs in the furnace.
On the out door circuit board there is a pin for the defrost cycle timing.
Below those setting is a pin for compressor cycling.
On the XP-15 that pin needs to be in place,

I know Lennox will run the H/P in heat for 1st stage but it has a sensor that will switch to 2 nd stage at a given outdoor temp.
And I think that temp is around 45*,

Why would they install the coil that direction ?
isn't the other end supposed to be on the furnce.
That could be why the gap is present.
The opening is away from the blower so the air is hitting...
BINGO,,,,, That matched VS air handler will have the correct TXV already installed. If it's a H/P it will need a few minor wire changes made inside the indoor unit as well.

In your area, if you go with 2stg H/P.
It will run most of the winter in 2nd stage anyway.
You'll get your 2 stage operation best in the A/C mode.

Leave unit as it is.
Set new unit on top of it,
cut lineset repipe to new unit. Same with electric.
now it's where you can work on it in the future.

The match up is more critical with the coils in the heatpump set up.
some heatpumps require a slightly bigger indoor coil during the heat mode, when going with R410a.
