Well, just as you think you are on to something, something new happens...... This morning, the unit went into defrost as it should.

I did not hear any surging noises from the furnace combustion...

When this happens the fan and compressor are stopped. It is only the furnace running. The compressor does run and heat later on, but it doesn't seem that the outside unit is running a defrost cycle....

Update,

I have not seen the heat pump defrost all day, though it does run and heat. I think I may be on to something???

Perhaps the gas is being pulled in when the heat pump is supposed to be...
