Take care of the basics first , screwdrivers , nutdrivers , wrenches etc....basically all your basic hand tools as you will be starting as a helper most likely. add on as you need it for the job.

I use the Ideal Reflex T stripper , T&B crimper , I have found that I don't care for multi use pliers/strippers. I wouldn't worry about buying everything at once. Just take your time and buy quality...
What are you trying to accomplish with the rain sensor? we have used sensors to detect snow for Liebert units in data centres, we energized the condenser fans every so often to avoid ice and snow...

Those are things you will need to look into....I have 4 online daisy chained for the last year, nothing hardwired all read/write via BACnet....I ran 22ga 3 wire for my MS/TP the literature stated...

What issues are you experiancing ?
I just finished a integration to M2 last year and to date haven't had any issues, It was done through Reliable, I have 4 RTU's controlled through BACnet for a VVT system
