Unit has run a week now without tripping out. Guess either the defrost board / sensor or the contactor was the problem. Noise must be normal operation.
It does not take a tech to change filters and keep coils clean. But I'm sure there are things I missed by not having it serviced, and I'm probably paying the piper now. Like I said, my bad.
I love your area. Spent a week with friends at a resort between Harrisonburg and Elkton last summer. But unless you will be in Southern New Jersey sometime soon..............

To gsxrsquid and wrench tech, the unit makes the hissing noise while it is in heating mode, and the tech that was out mentioned that it was a scroll type...
There has been no freon added or subtracted since the unit was installed 11 years ago. This is the first time I have had it serviced (my bad).
It has been over 2 days now and the unit has not...
Reply to Dash: This unit has been operating for 11 years - I don't think it is a ductwork problem.
Have had to reset Rheam heat pump almost daily. Coils are clean inside and out. Tech came and said pressure is a little high (low side 50, high side 175 at 30 F outside and 65 F inside).
