I believe that those sizes refer to the furnace cabinet size of the blower compartment. Different sizes for different applications. I could be wrong though.

Manufactures recommend replacing the entire water heater of any submerged unit that has a "flame guard" style bottom. IE State & AO Smith.

Pick up the book, "Pumping Away" by Dan Holohan. It has a wealth of information regarding piping options for hydronic systems. Lots of diagrams too.
