It sounds like he tried to balance by blocking the flow of air at a vent that was getting more than the rest, forcing that blocked air to find another way out (the vent that wasn't getting much air)....

protective painting
When I worked in Hawaii, we would send a brand new unit over to the painting bays next door. The guy would spray on a protective coating similar to factory color. They held up well with the coating.
