I agree, this was definitely caused by an A/C unit with a very bad smoking problem.
Its parents were smokers and this one picked up the habit at an early age.

Sooo, why not just shoot a long screw through both caps then into the sheet metal of the unit?

On a kitchen exhaust duct, can screws be used or will they be a place for grease to collect? If no screws are to be used then what`s the right way to install?
