Cheap filters work good as long as they are replaced. I have several customers that use nothing but blue filters for the last 20 years and their coils look like your after picture.

What you have is a piston coil. A check valve would be on a system with a TXV, not all TXV systems have check valves.

Yes you need an indirect tank with the GB142.

The GB142 was first installed in 1983 in Germany, they have had few issues. You do need to have it cleaned every year.
