I'd get the best I could afford and go with that. You can get a Starrett dial indicator set for less than 4 digits. Never been a fan of the straight edge method other than for temporary start-up....

Comes right off the discharge and dumps into the evaporator outlet at a tee, before the txv sensing bulb, not exactly ideal. Remember these units are 1985 vintage.
