I have used a bearing splitter and puller to get them off, but as others have said heat will usually do the trick.

I'd get the best I could afford and go with that. You can get a Starrett dial indicator set for less than 4 digits. Never been a fan of the straight edge method other than for temporary start-up....

I've only ever seen something similar one time, though the motor had a distinct growling sound when it was running. This was on a 40 hp built up air handler and you could light a 120 volt trouble...

These air dryers run 24/7 load or no load, though there is always some air passing through the HX. The only time they are not running is when i turn them off to work on them or the power goes off!...

Comes right off the discharge and dumps into the evaporator outlet at a tee, before the txv sensing bulb, not exactly ideal. Remember these units are 1985 vintage.
