You have to use a purge on your tanks, it's the only way to do it. I would never hook a hose up to the tank with the valve slightly cracked and vented through the rupture disc line.

I have probably done 75-100 overhauls, some with the beam rubbing on the volute,and have never one time used a specific Trane tool to do them.

I have never had problems with leaking economizer gaskets, even 20 year old chillers with no overhauls were fine.
