You pay really well! $50 to pull weeds would solve our homeless problem.
So, do you just charge them and hour labor to find a working shutoff?
I would.
Was that damage caused by a UV light? How did it melt the plastic? I would expect UV to make plastic brittle and crack but melt. Also the light in the picture is way above the humidifer.
My...
I connected mine to the EAC terminal like someone mentioned. It comes on when ever the fan is on. I didn't see any point in running it all the time with no air. Just wastes electricity and bulb...
When a UV lamp is installed. Is it on a switched power supply or on all the time?
I question the math in the article. System cost was 20K , heating oil bill was 2K per year and payback is 3-7 years.
For those on this board who may not listen to NPR this was on yesterday..

From a HO perspective. How do we know what is a reasonable price?
This board doesn't allow prices so no help here. If they work as advertised an HVAC system should run 20 years. You may buy...
How's that working out for you?
You think the guy who repaired the van doesn't have overhead.
After spending $0.6k on a new controller board. I know have surge protectors on the controller board/air handler.
Most modern boards have a lights that flash a code to tell you what is wrong. When lightning took out my controller board nothing worked. If flashed and error code.
One quick piece of advice. I have 2 units. One GSX 13 and a SSX 14. The SSX is much quieter than the GSX. So much quieter I wish I had bought both units as SSX.
I almost don't count caps as an actual failure. In Texas they are consumables. I think everyone I know has had them replaced.
I guess warranty repairs should be broken into 2 categories. 1)...
What I mean by "admit" it they pay. I expect they never admit to any thing but may eventually pay to have something replace. Is there something like a recall for HVAC systems. If my car has a...
I have a question for the pros?
What fraction of your work is for full warranty? Items where the manufacturer of the system admits there is a flaw and replaces the parts.
I'm just wondering...
I'll make a you tube video of the difference in noise level. I was quite impressed with noise level difference.
One reason I ended up with the GSX 13 upstairs was evaporator size. I needed a...
I wanted to thank every one who posted a response to my question. I had a GSX system installed in '09 and an SSX installed in '10. It was hot enough last weekend to run them both and the noise...
I'll do you a favor and answer some of your questions before the bashing starts.
1. Could I have gotten something for humidity control to prevent a dry heat?
2. Can I still get something for...
Thermostat powered by 24 v from your HVAC system. Requires a hot and ground wire which isn't always connected.
On the Home Depot thermostat. I agree with the pros. For something you will buy...
Furnace is 95% so it has a drain anyway. Gets a lot more flow than I expected.
I don't know. I need to get a monitor. I have a humidifier in the upstairs unit but not the downstairs. I may get one for down stairs also. I was hoping the upstairs one would be big enough for...
I put cheap dial thermometers in the plenums and just leave them there. Pretty cheap at Harbor Freight. My system was just installed and was running at about 55 so I upped the air flow a bit so now...
Anyone want to give me opinions on the ideal temperature rise in a gas furnace? My manual says 30-60 but is there a more ideal number for comfort?
You can argue Privity.
Privity of Contract definition:
A doctrine of contract law that prevents any person from seeking the enforcement of a contract, or suing on its terms, unless they are a...
Worst I ever saw was a friend who had been sanding drywall in her kitchen. Right next to the intake. Unit was frozen solid. I've never seen a filter that heavy. Dust killed he blower motor.
Here is a spreadsheet that will allow you to enter your energy costs and compare.

For global warming maybe you should believe the pros. :pileon:
My house is on solid rock, not practical to try geo.
As for why I post. I could ask most pros the same question. Most answers...
Good question. Unlike most posters in this group I believe in global warming and want to do my part to help. I drive a car that gets 45Mpg. The 2nd largest carbon user is my AC. I believe if most...
After all that I get "So what"
What is "anti-groupy"
I've been upgraded from DIY hack to "half assed HVAC guy"
I think I prefer DIY hack.
Flashing lights in unit may tell you what is wrong. Then read the manual.
If you are cold and it is urgent call a pro before it gets really cold and they are to busy to come out.
I've owned both. 2 story with 1 system and 2 story with 2 systems. 2 is much better.
I would recommend 2 systems and dual stage heat. Get a load calc to get the correct numbers but you...
Finally a fair question. I do have an epa card. No one asked for it to buy 410a. I got lucky and found quite a bit of equipment on craigslist. If I installed 1 system I would be a little ahead...
I don't know the full story. I think there were lots of I'll be there today and no show. Wife and kids actually move out. I told him what to check but he was afraid to do it. I wouldn't do it...
See I knew answering your questions wouldn't make any difference.
OK I'll play.
I guarantee you if you did the install yourself it is not a safe install and will not last the life intended by the manufacturer. How? You havent't seen my install or asked...
I refer you to the wall of shame. How many of those are DIY? I went DIY for 2 reasons. I had a brand new Lennox system installed by a certified installer and it was way oversized. I was...
Site doesn't like numbers. So they will be deleted soon. At which point your post won't make much sense.
I've noticed in the paper that most of the systems I see advertised have a price that...
Am I wrong? I've read half a dozen of these an they are all the same.
Here is my summary.
New member. I can get an AC system on ebay for half price.
Pros
It won't have a warranty.
Why do these threads end up with all the "pros" agreeing with each other. We know how you feel.
So I've done my first pass through HVAC-Calc, and I agree, it was straightforward to use. I ended up with a sensible heat gain of 23.4K, and a latent heat gain of 3.7K (may have been a little...
As a comparison. I have a 3600 sq foot house in Austin. Similar temps to Dallas. I have a 2 ton downstairs and 2.5 ton upstairs. Units are very quite because of the low air velocity. This I kept...
I finally got a chanced to look in my condenser. Looks like I have the smaller tubes. 2.5 ton condesner is very small.
These guys hate DIY. Costs them business.
You're in the same boat most DIYers find themselves. Parts are easy to install and cheap but lack of experience means you may have to change a few...
Bush was a smaller government Republican. He doubled the national debit in 8 years. Obama is on track to do the same in ~6 years if nothing changes.
I didn't see the list of what needs to be...
I wouldn't be too worried. One thing this election has told us it Americans are lazy and have a short attention span. The lazy part will continue to be good for the service industry.
AC is a...
For comparison I live in Texas 5 bedroom 3600 sq ft and I have a 2.5 ton upstairs and 2 ton downstairs. 4.5 tons of total cooling with daytime highs > 105 in the summer.
Runs a lot in summer but...
We keep it at 78 during the day when we are here and 84 when not.
75 at night just to keep the humidity down and we still use 2000 KWh per month. This was not a hot year in Texas.
I...
Looks like you peaked at 16Kwh per day in June.
I peaked at 66Kwh per day in Sept this year. How do you keep your usage so low?
