Depending on which J/B 3 cfm pump you have you should be able to get to rated micron levels; check the specs.

Sorry, I misunderstood... There's no easy way to know for sure except to just unscrew slowly, and make sure it vents, as already mentioned.

I use a J/B Platinum 1.5 CFM pump with Nu Calgon Cal-Vac Oil (<0.0001 mm Hg vapor pressure [that's 1/10th of a micron!]) for blank off testing of my vacuum components.
