Yes, WD-40 works pretty well; laquer thinner works better, however, it is more toxic.
I too use never seize on the shafts - makes doing it the next time a nicer experience.

Pascone makes a good point - I have a Ritchie # 93560 @ 6CFM - really like it.
Use a good vacuum gauge, and above all - CHANGE THE OIL REALLY OFTEN - the pump lasts, and gives good performance.
