What ever furnace you put in. Make sure you get one with a variable speed blower motor. It will compensate for inadiquit duct sizes and will be alot quieter.

Sounds like someone didn't wire the stat correctly.
The ones in the attic are fun also. You come out of the attic covered in insulation because someone decided to blow more in.
I wouldn't mess with the gas valve too much. Call a service company up so it can be safely repaired.
It dosen't matter if it is horizontal or on the bottom. Just make sure both pipes pitch back to the furnace at 1/4" per foot.
