Is the furnace dirty and sucking in a lot of dust? Is there something in the air that could be burning to it? What are you using to clean it with? Don't use sand paper. I just use a small wire brush.

Oil furns put out hotter air, but lower temp air and longer run times produce a more comfortable house. You will have a hard time convincing people of that if they have always used oil.
