I'm interested in the Nest thermostat. I've read they aren't compatible with variable speed air handlers. My current tstat, a Lux has just 4 wires (R-Y-G-W)

The original intake was a 18 inch, but narrowed down before entering the a/h.
They did install a 12 inch to add more air intake. -

Here in South Florida I have never seen a filter that is thicker than a inch. I wouldnt even know where to get a thicker one. I usually get mine at Lowes or Home Depot.
