Unintentional venting is legal. Not much you could have done about it safely. Number one thing is eye protection, and gloves but it's not really worth the risk.

Check that you read 0 volts across both reds and not 48 volts. If you read 48 flip the secondary leads on one of the transformers.

I assume it is the built in secondary fuse on the transformer...
