LK Joel-
That's insane lol. I understand checking the king valves aren't really something you burn into your brain when trouble shooting but I can't believe it took that many techs. I've only been doing service for 1.5 years and I have seen some crazy things that installers and other techs have done. I started out in installs 4 years ago and I've messed some stuff up but I've never done anything close to some
Of the stuff I've seen done. It's amazing what people will thank up or forget to do. When I'm on a call I make a habbit out of focusing on that call and only that call. Nothing else on my mind. I've realized very quickly that's how mistakes happen.
The company has a client that has several stores, complete pain in the arse. It was 85 ot the other day
And manager said a/c worked perfectly ( nice and cool). Yeah right. Found 2 new furnace and a- coils but line sets not attached, and no new condensers to match. Old 1987 condensrs still sitting on the roof, I wish we'd get rid of this account. Sites in horrible areas where u only work till noon and get the hell outta there. I've submitted quotes for split replacement several times and instead f having my company do it they hire an outside company to screw it up. Of course I have to go back and submit another quote, they'll probably source the work out to another company again. Its like a nightmare.
I hate accounts that do that. You get what you pay for and if you're looking for the cheapest company most of the time you'll get the cheapest work. We've all seen it a million times
Had a good one this past week. I just finished a 2 day pm at a local bank which happens to be an account of mine. 2 days later I get a call that an air handler is making a noise. I stop what im doing pack up and go on the call. I meet the manager and she tells me it is coming from the banks president office. It is an old air handler with a hot water coil and a ac coil. I figure a motor belt or bearing issue. Walk in the room and you can hear the air handler but nothing to indicate a problem. She tells me its a high pitch noise. Climb into the drop ceiling shut the unit off, noise still there. It is not the AH. Shut off lights, computers, battery backups, checked phones, even went into the ceiling again and still cant find the source. I told her to check inside the desk, opens the bottom drawer, sound gets louder. Found a hand held game making the noise due to low battery. President comes in and ask me if the problem was fixed. Yes sir, put a new battery in your game and the noise went away.
Yesterday I had to leave my rush job and go to a 5 day old install that was leaking water. Drain was running uphill.
Not the stupidest but a good one. No heat from the heat pump in a am standard 20 seer hybrid system. Started poking around.. Hmm where's the o wire, where's the rev valve? Umm sorry sir that's an ac not a heat pump.
last winter got a call from a lady about a rattling metallic noise coming from the boiler. This lady rents each of the rooms in her house to students and she lives in the basement.
I go over there right away since i suspect a pump coupling and severe cold was forecast. I go down to the boiler and sure enough i hear the noise but it seems to be coming from the pipes, not the boiler. I turn off the boiler and the noise continues. Its definitely coming from the pipes. I go find the lady and tell her that the noise seems to be coming from the pipes to the room above. She insists we find out what it is so we go up there and inspect. She opens the door and sure enough the noise is louder. She turns on the lights and there it is.....A vibrator. on the floor, turned on, and banging up against the radiator pipe.
two weeks later she calls back. Boiler making noise. I ask her what the noise is. She describes it as a squeaking and banging noise that goes on for 20 minutes most nights around 9-10PM. Sometimes it happens in the morning too, but never during the day. She simulates the noise and it sounds EXACTLY like the noise you might here on the other side of the wall when staying at a low rate hotel (a combination of squeaking springs and a headboard smashing the wall). I ask if this noise only happens when the student living about the boiler is there. She thinks about it for a moment and says yes. I suggested the noise may be coming from that room and to investigate that first before I make another trip.
She never called back about the noise, but I've done other work there since and never heard anything more about it so I'm guessing she figured it out
Stupidest call?
Hair salon, single RTU, 90° day.
Walked to the stat (Honey focus pro) and saw the word "off" under the "system" section.
Turned it on.
No other problem.
x2. if it was a customer that we ask are you going to be there alll day. They reply "yes". We tell them we will be there ASAP we are busy but we will get to them today.
Then the same customer calls and harasses us every 30 mins to see where we are at. They get charged more vs a calm and patient customer that 9 out of 10 times in cases similar to this will catch a break on their bill
