Use a low-efficiency media roll pre-filter.

I just bought a home with a detached garage. It was used for a woodworking shop. It has a airhandler in the attic, with the return air filter frame flush with the ceiling. It is set up for 2" filters.
I have a portable smoke/fume extractor, and a exhaust system in there, but the filters still get very dirty very quickly.
Is there a filter system that is made for dirty environments, a washable that is available, any other things I should look at?
