Our morning news had a segment on lost pets from the area in louisana affected by the flooding. How they will ever expect to reunite them with their owners is beyond me but the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals , Sacramento SPCA has recieved and is caring for stray animals that have been found from the area
Since I started a thread "Pets are not welcome here" a week ago, I have heard and watched many news items about pet resuce. Apparently, many, many animal humane organizations are doing a lot of rescueing down there. And, finding the original owners of rescued animals. But, they need money to continue their efforts.
Latest news told of a wealthy person from Calif (?) who put up $50,000 or more to bring many pets there. Many orgainizations like http://www.petfinder.com are really trying to find and reunite owners with their pets. The unclaimed will hopefully get adopted.
Now our local news talk show talker is gripping about the manpower used on this mission. Seems he thinks it more worthy to be pulling bodies (live and dead) out first.
Trouble is, if all effort is towards humans, then the animals will surely suffer disease and injury before death and will never be reunited or given foster homes. Thousands are helping humans, only hundreds are caring for animals.
Both can be rescued.
Petfinder.com has unveiled a comprehensive Animal Emergency Response Network helping companion animal victims and their caretakers during disasters. This is a collaborative database linking information from the public and emergency response organizations and making it available to rescuers, victims, and volunteers. The database features the following:
displaced hurricane victims post the locations of their pets so that rescuers can go in and save them
rescuers post the descriptions and photos of pets they find making them available for distraught pet parents to find them
volunteers post their offers of foster care which displaced hurricane victims can search to find temporary care for their pets
Both can be helped.
