Retrofitting a Trane Compressor
I have found on some of the Trane Roto-lock compressors that they are to expensive and due to the systems age you can still get good life out of the rest, I have adapted a few to some Copeland Recips. Match it up to the last compressor and route the piping a little and you should be able to preserve the unit for a few more years and it should cost you a little less.

Yeah, guess you could do that, but the extra labor to repipe might make it less attractive. I have put Maneurope compressors in Trane units with good results, but you'd have to check prices and such to see if it was an option that might save you any money. Also, get them to price you a new outdoor unit. I know some want to change the indoor and outdoor on every job, but on a 5-6 year old system you'd probably be okay and probably get a 5 year warranty on the compressor in the new unit. You really need a couple of contractors to sit down with you and go over all your options and then decide what is best for you.
