Dearest people of the Gen Disco,
If you were hiring today employees either off the street or out of vo-tech what are the 10 most important things they should know?
1. Respect Seniors, watch and learn from them, as they have aquired lots of experience that you can learn faster from and save a lot of trial and errors at the expense of customers.
That's a good one. Most of my experience was past down to me from senior technicians.
Ditto on Respect.
It's tied for first place along with Honesty, Reliability, a desire to Learn and (big in my book) COMMON SENSE !
I'll have to get back to y'all on the next 5.
No Smoking = don't try to blow smoke up anyones butt
Remember those three little words ... I DON'T KNOW, {but i'll find out}
Your navel is not a periscope = Keep your head out of your butt
Your mother doesn't work here = pick up after yourself.
If all else fails, THINK!
1. How to communicate effectively. (to their piers, to their management and to their customers). To tailor their communication style to their audience.
2. A passion for learning new things
3. Mechanical, electrical, physics basic apptitude.
4. Ability to interpret theory and apply it to the given situation.
5. SYSTEMATIC TROUBLESHOOTING SKILLS (should probably be #1 on the list) (ex: 7 step problem solving, fishbone diagrams, etc)
6. Desire for the job
7. Ethics
8. Time management
After these things, the rest comes easy. Unfortunatly not all these things can be effectively taught.
1 Drink light beer.
2 Smoke full flavored!
3 Don't tell her your real name.
4 Be patient, take your time.
5 Do it right the first time.
6 Just tell the damn truth.
7 Do as you say.
8 If you don't know ask.
9 Look and act professional
10 Make lots of money
Numero uno: Safety! A careless tech could end up costing you more than any ten sharp techs could make you.
Listen with your ears, not your mouth..
