'Morning Bret and everyone. Wtg Ray! That was one of the reasons I wanted to get into a union shop - heard really good things about the training. JP, most of the major packages that you use on Windows will run on Mac too and you can get substitutes for everything else. Every web browser except for the Internet Explorer will run on both Mac and Linux - so you got Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium (Chrome minus the Google spyware) and Opera. Windows Mail obviously won't work, but you can use Mozilla Thunderbird on both Mac and Linux. Microsoft Office will work on Mac, but not on Linux (you can try Libre Office on Windows/Mac/Linux and I've found it to be a good substitute for MS Office for light use but I wouldn't use its spreadsheet for work). I'd offer more suggestions but I don't know what you're using in your daily life.

Everything I've ever done has been PC.

I LOVE the IOS interface and think that particular platform to be the best mobile device software that I've used to date. I've also used BlackBerry, various android and Windows Mobile devices and, to put it bluntly, they sucked.

Is it possible to use any of the PC compatible programs on Mac?

Or, since all I really plan on using it for is E-mail and web surfing, would I be better off with an iPad (maybe a mini) and being done with it and using the PC for work?

JP, you can install two programs, Parallels or Fusion (I use Fusion) and then you can install your old windows right into Fusion and run whatever you want. I call it the dark side but still need to use some programs (like RefProp for the refrigerant properties to put into the DRSAs). Updates will amaze you and a macbook is blindingly fast with the internet and N router from Mac.

VirtualBox is another, then there's VMWare.. I've used VirtualBox for running some work-specific apps that were Windows-only and I still use it, but this time no Windows, just like to keep personal and work systems separate.
