electric water heaters

Any links on bonding electric water heaters. Had an inspector not pass a new electric water heater. His reason for not passing it was. It is not bonded. The piping is cpvc. I checked the NEC and fund no code to back up his claim

Bonding connects two or more metallic things together so they are at equal potential, for instance hot and cold piping, building structural members, etc. NEC 250.104 (A)(1) says that metal water piping installed in a building shall be bonded to the service equipment enclosure, the grounded conductor at the service, the grounding electrode conductor, or to the one or more grounding electrodes used. Since your piping is nonmetallic, this would not apply. My question to the inspector would be "bonded to what?"

Now of course the heater is required to be grounded, but surely you have a ground conductor already pulled in with the branch circuit conductors?

You then give the inspector an opportunity to tell you which code is the violation. Non metallic water lines are not required to be bonded.

Unfortunately, their are many guys like this out there.

You may have to go to the department head.

I would like to know what the final outcome of this inspection is. Please keep us updated. Did you try calling them and asking exactly what they wanted.
