union question

i left my previous company after 6 years i started working for a union company its going good, ive been there for about 3 months now. im not enrolled in school, but they told me after about 6 months im gonna have to swear in??? i asked around i was told basically im swearing that i will stay for x amount of years if i leave i can get sued for breaking the contract or something? is this true. honestly im looking to start my own thing but wanted to get a few more years in and save a little more money! whaat happens if i go union for about 2 years then leave??

You are probably being asked to say you will stay in the union because Florida is a "right to work" state.

Consult a lawyer or paralegal in your area that handles labor questions.

The "swear in" is a formality, all union brothers do it, I missed my first and then my second, I was way busy working and our business agent agreed to "swear me in" in-absence.
If you take advantage of the union training then the union can legally come after you for reimbursement if you go back non-union, I know one guy that left the union and open his non-union hvac business, he forfeited his 7 years pension contributions and that was it, that's very typical, you leave, you'll loose your investments. I also know guys that have left and came back years later and got their money back.our union leaders are not there to screw you, they are tradesmen, workers like you and me.

i apreciate the reply, i just feel this union company is to laid back im young and love the overtime that i used to get at the other company, here they light me up with deductions, i dont see it now but i guess ill see it at the end. i still have a few more months to make up my mind

Sadly big business with the help of the republican party are trying really hard to break the American labor movement, I worked non-union most of my life, made tons of money for the bosses, time went by and I wast getting any younger, my 401k wast worth a spit, my health insurance was costing me half of my paycheck and the union offered me a better way. joined the union and have not look back.
Down south with "the right to work (for less)" crap the unions are powerless, you are young but dont wait till the last moment to save for retirement, if I was union from the get go, I would had been retired by now.

I am for neither party but the dems are out to ruin this country. I hope you like paying a lot of taxes on your wages because that is where we are headed.

I believe both political parties are equally corrupt but one party leans more towards the working man while the other its all about the corporations. Sorry your union adventure didn't work out, its not for everyone.

Sorry but I did not mention anything about unions. I commented on on your political statement. But since you brought it up the unions are a corporation built on your money. Many of the large union companies are corporations and most of the big jobs that union trades work on are for big corporations. So if there where no corporations where would you get all the work for your membership? See my point? You can't blame corporations for taking money when it is actually your government taking it with all the taxes that we all pay. If the government would stop spending they would be able to cut taxes and more corporations would have more money to hire union and non union alike. With all the taxes that are coming the pension you have will be taxed to death.
Also where do you think your pension money is invested in? CORPORATIONS!

Id like to see all workers unionized, or unions abolished. Its kinda bs like it is now. A few guys making more money than most. Most guys somehow or another paying for the few guys making the most.

That is what you do not get. You work for a corporation. Small businesses are incorporated.
