Getting ready to install new heating & cooling system in basement of existing 50 year old home. Considering split system heat pump. Mountains of North Carolina. Would like opinions on heat pump with electrical backup versus heat pump with propane backup. Thanks.

need to know price of juice per kwh and gallon of propane but odds are heat pump with electric backup will blow away propane.

You're right. Propane is a little high now but we're with an electric coop in the mountains and the power is anything but cheap. I'm not sure what the cost per kwh is but last year the individual room resistance heaters ran us over $350 a month......just keeping the house at 65 degrees.

NC has very reasonable electric rates.
Forget propane backup and purchase a high eff heat pump with var speed air handler.
I have attached a fuel comparison calculator so you can crunch some numbers.
Good LucK!
