If you still like to help, can you tell me anything about terminal 71 on the input board (031-00935) for a York YS chiller?

I was going to reply with something like this, but you beat me to it! Many manufacturers have confidential service bulletins that one would be scolded for if not worse for sharing. None of us want to lose our job. On the same note, many of us like to help out. It's a tough line.
I agree with the newbie comments. We have no idea what their skills are. Sure, give someone a step by step and they may get it done. It's the question of if they know why they are doing it that way, that scares me.
Hope my pro status comes through. Would like to share some of the love I've already gotten here in such a short time.

Stop, step back, relax and have another go at it.

York56 has a valid point. I have heard instances of factory reps being told by the factory not to share proprietary info on line. HVAC-Talk has been specifically mentioned once that I've heard of.

It's entirely understandable that people who take risks try to minimize those risks.

A lot of spanking going on around here. Is the new "50 Shades" movie coming out soon?

My problem is that there are a few of our "Pro" members here who are lucky enough to have a factory gig with full access to all the information and they take it upon themselves to strut around here with a holier than thou, know it all, prima donna attitude towards any "newbie" or person who they feel is not qualified to work on anything larger than a 2.5 ton split system.

When our "Pro" see someone ask for any literature the first thing they do is automatically assume this guy is an idiot who cant possibly be capable of working on "their" equipment. Then they will try and determine if this person is "worthy" of this information, make that person prove to them that they are worthy of their help, please, like who really knows who is on the other side of the keyboard anyway.

Then when someone decides to help this poor "newbie" and give them the info they are looking for, our "Pro" decides it's HIS JOB as the keeper of the literature to make a post or sends a Private Message ( yea I got them I just never answered ) "explaining" that the free trade of information and helping someone out is a bad thing and that everyone needs to follow his rules and hold onto that literature until he feels a person is qualified to receive it, sounds like a literature nazi to me.

Our "Pro" really cant help themselves, when working for a manufacturer a person develops an attitude that they are the only ones in the world qualified to work on their particular brand, this attitude is pounded into their heads on a regular basis from management and above. I drank that Kool-Aid for so many years until my head hurt listening to that BS. In their mind if you don't a have a manufacturers logo on your shirt you are not worthy, when the reality is there are a lot of really good mechanics out there that are fully capable of working on equipment and figuring out problems, sometimes they just need a little information.

I'll try and help anyone I can, I dont feel threatened or feel that my livelihood is in jeapordy, and it pisses me off when someone tries to tell me (spank ) what I should or should not do with the information and knowledge I have collected over the last 37 years of MY career.

If you can contact a moderator they should be able to do it. You might try clicking on the little black triangle on the post and ask the moderator to remove the file you supplied. I don't think that's the proper way to do it, but it may work. If you can PM a moderator you will have to supply a link to the post so they know what you want deleted.

So explaining my point of view is a spanking? I know you replied on another thread about the literature Nazis. Just so we're clear this is one of the definitions of Nazi..."a person who seeks to impose their views on others in a very autocratic or inflexible way." I would like someone to explain to me how outlining one's theory about sharing literature, knowledge or expertise makes that person a literature Nazi.

I think those among us who prefer not to share technical information on an open forum are leery of someone coming on the forum for the first time, asking for information for which we don't know if they have the skill set to be trusted with such information. The other problem from where I stand is reciprocity. So Mr. Newbie comes on the open forum, scores a service manual and we never see him again. Hey buddy, thanks for nothing. I share information and manuals when I have a little better idea of the audience. And generally speaking, I send it directly to the person asking for it in the Pro's Forum not posting it for everybody. That's my preference and if that makes me a Nazi, then so be it, but I think it's a bit strong and disrespectful to name call people who help others on this forum.

Maybe a competitor or someone you would prefer not have it will get it from you here. You can do as you wish. I have always tried to know with whom I was sharing my literature. Posting it on an open forum doesn't allow one to screen or assess if every individual who has access to it is qualified to have it. When I was in the field I was protective of my literature and my knowledge. Anybody can turn a wrench. What differentiates a really good mechanic from the rest of the pack is knowledge. I know there are many who disagree with me and that's fine. I was in the business for 40 years and it provided a good living for me and my family. The way I saw it was if I freely gave away everything I learned or had on a printed page I was giving away my livelihood. No harm in sharing if done wisely.

Becoming a "Pro" on this site is ridiculously easy.
I suggest you apply for Pro status.
The Pro forums are only accessible to those with Pro status, and members here are much more likely to discuss in-depth topics, and share literature there.

Just remember that when you share on an "open" thread you're sharing with anyone with internet access. Including the floor manager of a department store, the helper at an industrial site, even visiting fans for a sporting event on a college campus (I've seen this on air cooled equipment, proven with security cameras). The list of potential unauthorized "operators" is endless.
